Minutes – 2007, April 4

The meeting was called to order by Susan Hoenhous, Co-Chair, at 6:30pm. 

1. Welcome and Introductions – Susan Hoenhous 

2. Parenting & Family Literacy Centre – Claire Silva 

  • Family Movie Night is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25, 5:30-7:30, presenting “Happy Feet”.  Permit to be arranged.  Popcorn/pop for sale, $1.00 each.  Flyer to go home.  Volunteers needed:  training to use popcorn maker, set up chairs. 

3. Dual Language Books: Starbucks Foundation Grant – Milica O’Brien 

  • QVPS the recipient of a $1,500 Starbucks Foundation Grant thanks to the efforts of Milica O’Brien, QVPS Librarian.  Funds will be used to purchase dual-language books for school library. Books will arrive early May and parents are needed to select books, 19-20 each in Chinese, Vietnamese, Tamil, Hindi and Urdu with first allotment of $1,000.  Other languages will be purchased with second cheque of $500. Grant requirements include: Starbucks label in each book, party and book launch in library, etc.  Books will be kept in special section of library. 

 

4. Principal’s Report – Jim Stathopoulous 

  • Staffing process for 2007-2008 underway. Projected numbers are down.
  • Dance-a-thon: Friday, June 1.
  • EQAO: May 22-June 8
  • QVPS Carnival: September 

5. Communications & Outreach – Susan Hoenhous 

  • QVPS/PPS Joint Parent Council Meeting took place on March 21, well-attended and enthusiastically received with special guests Trustee Irene Atkinson and Councillor Gord Perks in attendance.  Plans are underway for the next meeting to take place at QVPS.
  • QVPS Blog continues to expand and is fulfilling it communications mandate so far.
  • Parent Involvement Grant to be followed up with Marta, Nura, Susan and Leslie. 
  • Inner City Conference will take place April 19-21.  QVPS will be hosting delegates from the conference with a school tour.  Several QVPS Parent Council delegates will be attending: Susan Hoenhous, Monica Toffoli, Ron Toffoli, Shannon Thorndyke, Avery Sealy, Nura Aman and Abida Anwar, with the generous funding of the Ministry of Education. 

6. Fundraising – Susan Hoenhous 

  • Dance-a-thon: Beach party theme to take place Friday, June 1, once again organized by Shannon Thorndyke.  Volunteers needed to organize pledge forms, count money, sell bracelets and assist with crowd control.
  • School Carnival 2007:  planning will be the main topic of the next Parent Council general meeting on May 2.
